Netvibes users, read this !

Netvibes_feedburnerYes, netvibes uses, read this post.
I have noticed sometimes ago that the number of feed readers was changing from days to days.
Sometimes less than 50 readers, and sometimes more than 180 !
I was wondering why, and I have the answer : netvibes seems to have some problems.
Effectively,  I have approx. 126 readers of my feed, using netvibes.
But sometimes, the service seems to fall down, and so the number of readers of my feed for this time.
It's obvious when I look at the feeds stats in feedburner.
So, Netvibes users, if sometimes you do not see my feeds in your page, it may be because of Netvibes.

The Sand Game Mystery !

No, I will not speak about real sand, because it's been a very long time since I've seen real sand and waves. Too busy, too far away from the ocean, but believe me, next time I'll go surfing, it'll be hours and hours in the waves, no rest !
So what is the sand game mystery ? Well, this is a strange little phenomenon on the stats of this blog. I created months ago, a photo album entitled : Kidibi. In this photo album there is a picture called "sandgames". And this picture brings me TREMENDOUS traffic through search engines (yes, for  the past month  36 visits are related to this key word "sandgames").
I know, I know, it's a very low figure, but what's interesting is that this "sandgames" brings me more visits than all the other words I use in my posts.
That was the curiosity of the day for me. Nothing really relevant, nothing about Obama/Clinton, or Bill Gates retirement, or Sarkozy future wedding with Carla Bruni. Just few words about Sandgames, and the story of the picture of one of my kid playing in the sand.

Ah, yes, I'm currently reading "la mort blanche" written by Olivier Weber. I really like it. It manages to give the smell and atmosphere in Afghanistan nowadays.

Technology fails ...

Here are 2 examples that the 0 error concept, (like the 0 death of the US Army) does not work at all.

1- Feedburner / Netvibes : Looks like I have more and more problems with my feeds. Look at the attached diagram. How come I get 172 readers one day and less than 50 the next day ??? Strange isn't it ?
Feedburner_screenshot Analyzing the results, it is clear that it's due to a failure of Netvibes. Because mainly, my subscribers (you, dear friends), are using Netvibes.
So is Netvibes a bad system.
Well read what's next ...

2- Rss and Russia. In Russia, THE web leader is YANDEX. THE search engine in Russia. Yandex has launched lenta.yandex.ru, to read your favorite feeds. And looking at the screenshot, you'll see that, since yesterday, the sytem is not working.
Lenta  So, here again, technology fails.
Is it linked to the recent attacks from China ? :-)
Is it linked to the bad weather of this summer ?
Is it just because some days you should stay in bed ?

The strange beahvior of Feedburner

I am using feedburner to manage the publication and subscription to the RSS feed of this blog (and others). I can say that this tool is easy and good to see the number of subscribers, optimize the publications, etc.
But, I have noticed that I have some strange drop down. I reached 110 subscribers in average in the last 30 days, with some peaks at 139, and some drops to 30 users only (right now when I am writing this post, I have 30 readers of my feed).
May be it's true, and 100 people unsubscribed, but I find this strange, because I had another drop down on the 4th of July and on the 1st, and the day after it came back to 130 ...
If someone has an explanation, I would be really interested in reading it.

CRM - Blogs - True content

All the brands are (were) afraid of opening a blog to talk more directly with the customers, the buyers, everybody. Usually, the main remarks from the big boss are : and what if ? What if someone writes bullshits, what if someone complains, what if ... ?
Usually the answer is : the community around the blog is the first moderator ! The people reading the blog are usually "pro" the brand and not "contra". Of course, sometimes, some people are coming on these websites just to mess around, and insert some "activity". So, usually, unless the brand does not manage the communication with straight clear speaches, everything goes fine.

This morning, I read on thecleanestline, a comment which criticizes Patagonia's CRM. Clear example which shows that Patagonia is a human organisation, which sometimes, makes mistakes, and cannot please everybody :-).
Let's follow up how Patagonia will react to this ...

Thanks to 70 percent

Thanks to 70 percent for the info about Shaun Thomson and Patagonia's Cardiff action and the reference to a very nice website and pictures (Maggie Marsek).

What your legs see !

Sflouk New Photo Album on the right, block and what.
It is supposed to show you what your legs see while walking in the streets, while it's -15 and snowing, while everything is black and white around you, and with this strange "sound off" feeling due to the white cocoon all around you.
Ok, it's faraway from a real artist work (hey, I am not an artist, anyway :-)), but it's so close to reality, and reality is not photoshop, or perfect images. When it's perfect, it's clear, like a wave on a coral reef and I am afraid of taking a picture of a perfect moment, because it will not look real, and it may spoil it.
So here is life, as your legs see it. Moving, unperfect, funny, and hard to understand ...

Recognition ...

Bretaland While looking at the stats of this blog, I saw in the sources a blog. It's always interesting to know how come people finally found you on the web, because, honestly, this is such a mess ... :-)
So I decided to go have a look at this blog. Here it is : the Woolard Speak.
And I saw that Andrew Woolard mentionned MY BLOG (yes, my blog :-))), as an example of consumer blog.

Two consumer-generated blogs that showcase brand culture so wonderfully they should make companies drool:
Patagoniacs
Moleskinerie (previously mentioned)

Firstly, thank you to Andrew to mention the patagoniacs blog. In someway it is always nice to get  a recognition :-)). Looking at his small resume, I understand that we have some common points, regarding Running for example.
Secondly, let me make a little focus about the story of this blog.
in 2003, a friend of mine told me about the blogs and the fantastic power of the blogs. At this time I had a blog I used mainly to publish pictures and small stories about my trip in Tahiti and other surf trips. That was much easier to tell people, look there, instead of sending 1 mail to many. But at this time, I was not convinced by the impact of blogs on people, brands, markets, politics.
Then after a trip in Central Asia, I decided to open a "real" blog. And as I had contacts with Patagonia, and as I am a Patagoniac (I'll explain why later), I openned this blog. The aim was between the marketing experience, the personal experience, learning about blog and how it can be helpful to people, brands, etc etc.
At the begining, the Patagoniac blog was about the brand, the actions, the products, and all the questions related to Patagonia (ecology, sports, ...). I was not very active, at this time (see the first posts in French). First steps, first experience about blogs. Of course at this time I told Patagonia about this blog. I never intended to squat any domain, or brand. No that was just an experience.
Then, after some days, some posts, I wrote this post about Blogs, introspection .. and I changed a little bit the editorial lines of the blog (wow, that looks serious ... :-))) But that was not to be more efficient, that was a personal need. I was booby trapped by the blogs :-))
That's in few lines the story, the evolution of this blog. Now, some posts are personal, hidden messages to the happy few, some posts are still speaking about what I like or love (surfing, running, environment). I would say that, now this is a "normal"  blog, the mirror of a part of my life, with up and downs, with good posts and bad posts. Normal life, but that does not mean not interesting life :-))
About the fact that I am a Patagoniac, some explanations. I discovered the brand while I was spending time in the Alps, skiing, snowboarding. And I looked at the products. They were really good (expensive yes, but good ;-)). I bought some. At this time I knew nothing about the hidden part of Patagonia (environment, 1% for the planet ...). I received some catalogs, and I was interested by the brand, the texts, the engagement. Moreover, the brand is involved in the sports I practise (Surf, ski, snowboarding, trail running, climbing ...) Few brands cover all these segments in fact, with the ability to stick to the same image, the same guidelines.
So I became a Patagoniac, because I really embraced the brand, its values, the engagement ...

(Picture scriptum : early morning the sun was shining in Moscow, then the clouds appear, and it's again a sunless day, so this picture will bring colors to this post and this day).

Thank you !

Coucher_de_soleil I wrote a post one month ago about Blogs, Introspection, ... At this time I decided to change a little bit the way to write on this blog. So I created some posts, more personal, I put some photo albums, I wrote about more subjects ...
I do not sell anything (the amazon links are just there to show you the books I like and I want to share, but looks lik you have already bought them because I did not received one Kopek :-))), but like everybody, I am human, and so, I was afraid of being wrong and see less and less people reading the blog. Because, finally, I see a blog as something you give to the other, and it is a pleasure to give, only if people like what they get :-))
I am proud, and glad to tell you that more and more people are reading this blog. Thanks to Google Analytics to track this. (NO I DO NOT TRY TO SPY YOU !! I just want to make you happy ...).
Some figures :
Visits : + 48% from Sept to Oct, and +75% from Oct to Nov.
I do not aim at being the first blogger in the world, no, I just want to be sure that all surfers, patagoniacs, friends (or foes :-)), ecowarriors, etc etc, will find here a place they like, a place they want to share altogether.
This blog is like a wave. It does not belong to only one person, it belongs to those who accept to read (ride) it altogether. That means you.
Once again, THANK YOU.

Blogospherus

CyberblogospherusI've seen the Blogspherus experience there.
So I want to participate in it to see the real viral effect of blogs.
We hear a lot about Viral marketing, and this experience looks real and will, for sure, give a good image of the blogs viral effect.

Blog - Risks - introspection

Entree_musee_patan_durbar_square_018 When you open a blog there is always a risk. In fact there are several risks.
If you open it to speak about one dedicated subject, after a while, you always begin to speak about other subjects. You may try to avoid the usual, ego, "me", stuff, but finally the blog is an addiction, which forces you to write more and more about what you have in mind. At the end (or is it the begining), what you wanted to be neutral, interesting, begins to be your mirror, your personnality revealed to the world, your thoughts shared with unknown people.
When I openned this blog, it was to speak about environement, sports, Patagoniacs, a certain view of the world. Now, step by step, I am changing my mind, I try to stop this envy of writing about more personnal things, but this is hard. And, today, with the sun shinning in the streets of Moscow, thinking that life is good and short, I decided to be more personnal on this blog. Sometimes, I'll wrote useless post, useless for those looking for precise info about sports, environment, and surf. But useful for me.
I am trapped and decided to enjoy it.
I know you are not a lot to read me, and I would like to thank you.  I just hope that you will like the future on this blog.

The Kailloux team ...

Kailloux So here they are ...
Congratulations to Kailloux and the new members !!!
Go have a look there and there
Really good example of how you can have a good team for your brand and moreover, have a fun altogether.

Rell Sunn

Rell30th Thanks to Tex for sending me this message about Rell Sunn website.
http://www.rellsunn.com/

"There are Rell films, her favorite music, even grandbaby photos, and her furniture. Jan, owns RELL' MOTEL, near Laguna Beach, where she has reproduced much of Rell's HAWAIIANA collection, admired in SURFER'S JOURNAL (Vol2#3, Fall 93).

If you didn't know Rell, I hope her website also conveys the tenacity she and her friends needed to 'pry open' pro-surfing for woman. Rell opened and decorated a Patagonia store in Haleiwa' with her own Hawaiiana and very special piece's from her friends. I hope she would be proud of our Tokyo Ocean Patagonia and Cardiff Patagonia Ocean stores. Each are uniquely different, following her rule to honor Hawaii by respecting 'locals' the world over in her surf travels.

I hope you will support Rell's daughter's web site, by forwarding, to those who love Hawaii.

Keep alive Rell's charm of love, respect, athletic prowess, and optimistic tenacity."

The never do it again list (to be updated)

060714_170400Today is a new day. The kind of day you get up and say : I will never do mistakes again !
So here are some "never do it again" ...
- In tahiti (or anywhere else where you'll find sun, waves, monoi), do not forget to clean up the monoi on your body before going surfing. Your board will be a soap ...
- Do not try to go down a nice skate sloap very fast, in SLAPS. You'll loose your toes !
- Do not run the Courmayeur - Champex - Chamonix race again (to be checked in 10 months).
- do not run hard just after a good lunch ! really to hard for your belly !
- do not forget your surf boots when you go surfing on the coral and urchins ! you look like a rookie, but your feet will thank you ...
- never forget your warm jacket when you leave Paris in October and land in Moscow !
- ...

More to come later for sure ...

Meeting with Bloggers in Russia

26052006008 While I am not running in some strange places I also use blogs to meet people.
I had the opportunity to have dinner in Moscow this evening with 2 Russian Bloggers :
Felix and Anton.

They know well the Russian internet and have launched Blogus (Anton) and  Softkey.

This is always really nice to see how blogs are efficient when speaking about meeting real people in real life.

That was a real nice dinner, with a lot of discussions about blogs, Live Journal (is that really blogs ?),  the development of the russian Internet, but also food, leisures ... Normal discussions in normal life.

Russia is growing fast, Internet is more and more efficient and used by people. There are a lot of things to do ... for those who are ready to spend winters here :-)

About the Russian Web, web 2.0 and web 3.0, I would like to show you this article written by a Russian chief editor of www.eva.ru (grrr, a competitor of www.wmj.ru :-)).

Some nice blogs to prepare the UTMB

Here are some websites to learn about the UTMB, the training, the atmosphere, etc :

Very good blogs : http://philft.over-blog.com/ and http://yoyop.over-blog.com/

Official web sites to look at :

And more to come, each time I'll find one good ressource.

"Carnet de roots" Winner

Patagonia was part of the "carnet de roots" contest as mentionned here.

I received a copy of the text of the winner and the authorization to publish it on this blog.

The winner is : Anne Maupas Boucault, who wrote from Chili a text about her exploration as a child.
