How to look good, how to be good, how to be exactly like the others are.
Here is my list of the 8 people you obviously have in your network (yes 8, because I let you find the other ones) :
- The connector : everybody has it in his network, but you never met him. He has 10,000 friends and you see him everywhere on Twitter, FB, Linkedin, Viadeo, posting poor small tweets, creating only an echo of the news. Why do you keep him in your network ? Because you imagine that may be one day he'll be useful ? No way ! Delete him.
- The old old good (was he good?) friend : You were in 3rd grade with him/her, and you are now connected to him. But you are a doctor in Africa, while he is a trader in London. Not any common things left, but you keep thinking you're the same good kid and he is the good friend you'll do tricks with. Keep him only if he is a good friend of Gordon Gekko !
- The once upon a time "business lunch" : You met him once at a business lunch. Spoke about business opportunity, but didn't see any. He opened is full life on Facebook for you and you now see his wife, kids, friends (and he sees yours, you dummy user). You keep him because you think one day he'll be useful, and he thinks the same.
- The more or less good employee : you used to be his/her boss. You are connected with because you're or were in the same company. You always thought he/she was stupid, but never intended to tell about. You accepted him in your network because you said yes by chance by clicking on the link in your blackberry, you were tired and/or drunk, and can't delete this now, or you'll have to confess that you were both drunk and a bad manager.
- Your boss: See previous case, and think you are the employee ...
- The contact of a contact of a friend who is not really a friend, but you saw his/her picture. No comment. You keep her/she, because, it's always good to attract people to your profile because other people in your network look good !
- The unknown: you really do not remember where he/she comes from. So to avoid deleting the daughter or son of a big influent billionaire, you keep him or her in your network. One day you'll remind of something and will say you were right to keep him/her in your network.
- The Consultant : you do not really know him, he approached you,but you don't remember when and what for. He tries to sell his services and get fees by creating a group you are subscribed to, but don't read a post, anyway, you expect one day something great from him, like a whitepaper about how to get rich in 3 clicks and you keep him in your network because the day he'll do this, you'll write a book about how to get rich in 2 clicks.
